CEBU CITY – Sinabi ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. nitong Martes na ang paglulunsad ng isang pabrika ng bakal sa Compostela, Cebu, ay isang hakbang patungo sa isang matatag at highly linked na industriya ng bakal na magpapatibay sa posisyon ng Pilipinas sa global steel market.
Pinangunahan ni Pangulong Marcos ang seremonya ng pagbukas ng operasyon ng steel mill’s, na tinatawag na Compostela Works ng SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation (SAMC), at sinabing ito ay “aligns perfectly with the recently signed Tatak Pinoy Law, a law which aims to reduce our country’s import dependence and to be a mother industry to the manufacturing sector.”
Kasama niya sa okasyon si Benjamin Yao, ang Chief Executive Officer ng SAMC, at si Governor Gwendolyn Garcia sa paglulunsad ng pinakamalaking steel mill sa Cebu.
“Once it becomes fully operational, it will have an annual production capacity of 1 million tons of rebars, making it the country’s largest steel plant. What is even more exciting is that this is just one of SteelAsia’s projects over the next three years aimed at developing a strong Philippine steel industry that no longer relies on importation to meet our steel requirement,“ ani Marcos sa kanyang talumpati.
Binanggit din niya na ang steel mill ay sumusuporta sa flagship program ng administrasyon na Build Better More na layuning magpabilis ng mga industriyal na layunin at pagpapaunlad ng imprastruktura.
“We must thank SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation for bringing this state-of-the-art steel plant into fruition and, more importantly, for bringing meaningful employment to the 300 personnel in this plant, not yet including the 1,500 jobs that could be generated in the local community,” dagdag pa niya.
Sinabi ni Pangulo na ang Pilipinas ang tanging miyembro ng ASEAN na walang sariling integrated steel mill, na nagdudulot ng limitadong produksyon ng ilang produkto ng bakal bilang pangunahing raw material sa pag-import ng bakal ng bansa.
“The Compostela Works is one step forward in building a sustainable and highly-linked steel industry,” dagdag niya.
“I invite all stakeholders to pursue more investments aimed at reducing, if not eliminating, the limited raw materials situation. We recognize that much needs to be done towards achieving a reliable supply chain that could give birth to a new and integrated manufacturing industry,” dagdag pa niya.
Ang SAMC ay isang 59-year-old company na nanguna sa paggamit ng mga world-class na teknolohiya sa pagmamanupaktura ng rebars sa Pilipinas.
Bukod sa pagmamanupaktura ng rebars (reinforcing steel para sa konstruksiyon), nagbibigay din ito ng mga solusyong downstream para sa rebars, kabilang ang rebar detailing, cut-and-bend, reinforcing mesh, at rebar threading at coupling.
Ang company ay may anim na steel plants sa buong kapuluan, na may higit sa 3,000 na malakas na lakas-paggawa.
Sa kabuuan, ang pagsisimula ng operasyon ng Compostela Works ay nagpapakita ng pag-unlad ng industriya ng steel mill, na may layuning magdala ng pag-asa at progresibong pagbabago sa sektor ng pagmamanupaktura ng bansa para sa mas maunlad na Bagong Pilipinas.
